NCS To Deploy CA's Unicenter TNG Software To Manage Desktops In Singapore's Schools

Computer Associates International, Inc. (CA) and National Computer Systems Pte. Ltd.(NCS) today announced that NCS is deploying CA's Unicenter TNG to manage the desktop environment for Singapore's schools over the next five years. NCS has been appointed the facility manager for several ministries and government agencies, including the Ministry of Education (MOE), which drives the nation's MasterPlan for IT in Education.

The MOE's objective is to use information technology as a primary medium for education. The MasterPlan calls for schools to deliver 30 percent of their curriculum via technology, such as multimedia by 2002. To support this objective, the MOE is targeting a 2:1 student/computer ratio.

Under a five-year facility management contract, NCS will deploy Unicenter TNG and its asset management, remote control, software distribution, and fault and performance monitoring capabilities to provide Enterprise proActive Support Environment services (EASE) to 25% of schools throughout Singapore. About 700 PCs in each school will be supported by EASE. These services are expected to boost student productivity by providing increased system availability and reliability throughout the school system.

"The wiring of Singapore's primary schools will have a tremendous impact on both the lives of individual students and the long-term economic future of the country as a whole," said CA Chairman and CEO Charles B. Wang. "CA is deeply gratified in being able to play a role in ensuring that the Education Ministry can fulfill this vital mission."
NCS runs one of the largest data centres in the region with a capacity of more than 440 MIPS, and is networked to about 68 government bodies.

"NCS and CA have developed a strong partnership over the years, and have already proven their ability to work hand-in-hand to successfully and cost-effectively run projects of this scope," said K.C. Lee, Chief Executive Officer of NCS. "We believe that what we are doing for the Education Ministry will provide a model for turnkey management that can benefit the private sector just as much as it is now benefiting Singapore's schools."
