Ngee Ann Partners NCS to Train Technology Assistants Supporting Schools under the MOE Standard ICT Operating Environment for Schools Programme
Singapore, December 8, 2010
Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) School of InfoComm Technology has been engaged by NCS Pte Ltd to train the company’s technology assistants, who are servicing schools under the Ministry of Education (MOE) Standard ICT Operating Environment for Schools (Schools SOE) programme.
NCS was awarded the eight-year, $850 million contract earlier this year to provide all schools in Singapore under the Schools SOE programme with central infrastructure and computing services. The programme aims to bring about a common ICT infrastructure environment to schools that will continually enhance teaching and learning.
The partnership between the two parties will be sealed by Mr Chia Mia Chiang, the Principal of Ngee Ann Polytechnic, and Mr Chia Wee Boon, the CEO of NCS, when they sign a collaboration agreement at the polytechnic this afternoon.
Lecturers from Ngee Ann Polytechnic School of InfoComm Technology have put together a customised Certificate in IT Technical Support & Operations course to enhance the skill sets of NCS technology assistants who will be based in schools.
The three-week programme encompasses computer and network operations, including the enforcement of security and troubleshooting, as well as essential customer service skills.
Selected technology assistants from NCS will be trained by the polytechnic under the collaboration.
The first batch of 11 technology assistants from NCS, who have successfully completed the course, has already been deployed to the schools to help them effectively utilise the ICT services provided by NCS under the mega project.
Ngee Ann Polytechnic is also working out a road map to help NCS develop a training and career path for the high performing technology assistants, taking them through a suitable diploma and a specialist diploma programme.
These courses will be offered by the polytechnic’s CET Academy which manages Continuing Education and Training (CET) programmes for adult learners.

The polytechnic aims to provide relevant, balanced and value-added curricula by creating an effective teaching and learning environment.
As the first polytechnic in Singapore to introduce interdisciplinary studies to students, Ngee Ann pioneered a broad-based and multi-disciplinary approach to learning.
It was the first polytechnic in Singapore to launch Mobile e-Learning (MeL) in 1999, integrating a notebook ownership scheme, a wireless campus network and an e-learning platform. The entire polytechnic is now fully enabled for students to connect to the wireless network. About 95% of all the teaching modules are now available online.
Ngee Ann was also the first to partner an overseas educational institution to offer a degree under the Ministry of Education’s Polytechnic-Foreign Specialised Institution collaboration framework. Another key thrust for the polytechnic is forging partnerships with industry and research partners to enrich students’ learning journey and keep them up-to-date with market practices.
