The Consortium Led By NCS And NETS Launches "Traveller On The Move" Trial

Wireless technology can offer travellers a truly refreshing experience! The consortium led by National Computer Systems (NCS) and Network for Electronic Transfers (S) Pte Ltd (NETS) launched a six-month trial of "traveller On The Move" (TOM) -- an interactive, end-to-end, wireless service on Palm Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), today. Guests staying at Raffles The Plaza and Swissôtel The Stamford will be able to enjoy this wireless experience in a six-month trial supported by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB).

With TOM in hand, both business and leisure travellers can venture around Singapore with confidence and ease. Incorporating location-based services and on-line maps, TOM assists travellers to navigate to their preferred destinations in Singapore. At a touch, travellers can access a wide range of information - city access services, estimated distance and taxi fare to a particular destination, online booking and payment for Eng Wah movie tickets, currency converter, location of nearest money changer, walking tours, and Singapore's latest calendar of events. TOM delivers added value to travellers with exclusive offers and attractive deals through friendly Shopping and Food and Beverage (F&B) Guides. This frees business travellers and tourists alike of the hassle of searching for information on local attractions and happenings.

Knowing the importance for travellers to stay connected, TOM allows travellers to use the PDAs to surf the internet, check their e-mails, get access to the latest news, make phone calls and even send e-postcards to friends at home via the integrated mobile phone and General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) features on the PDA. TOM caters to travellers' needs down to the smallest details - like having a Singlish dictionary to make their stay in Singapore even more meaningful and enjoyable.

The six-month trial run will commence from today to 9 January 2004. During the trial period, Palm PDAs installed with TOM will be given to selected guests staying at Raffles The Plaza and Swissôtel The Stamford. Feedback on how the guests feel about the usefulness and affordability of the service as well as the new features they would like to be incorporated will be sought. The consortium will then further enhance the TOM features and introduce new services.

TOM is the brainchild of a consortium led by NCS together with consortium partners American Express, NETS, Palm, Raffles International Hotels & Resorts and SingTel. As the technology lead of the consortium and systems integrator, NCS put together various wireless and other technologies to deliver the innovative TOM. NETS, as the business lead of the consortium, provides the mobile payment services to enable e-commerce transactions on TOM. American Express leverages on its extensive merchant network to offer its Card members exclusive value and privileges at over 40 dining and retail outlets at the launch. American Express will design and introduce even more exclusive privileges to delight its customers in the months ahead. Palm provides the sleek Tungsten W PDAs with integrated phone. Selected guests at Raffles The Plaza and Swissôtel The Stamford, both managed by Raffles International Hotels & Resorts will be offered the exclusive use of the PDAs. SingTel provides the mobile voice, GPRS and location-based services.

The TOM project is supported by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) under the Wireless Tourism Call for Collaboration programme.
