Temasek Polytechnic partners with Industry to create a smart campus platform that can respond quickly and efficiently to the needs of staff and students

Singapore, November 24, 2014

Inspired by the initiative to establish Singapore as the world’s first Smart Nation, Temasek Polytechnic (TP) is setting up a Smart Campus Platform that leverages on a comprehensive and robust IT infrastructure and innovative technologies to make better decisions that improve the experience of studying and working at the Polytechnic.

A Smart Campus would facilitate the secure collection, analysis and evaluation of rich data to provide insights that lead to the creation of innovative solutions and services for the TP community. TP will work with leading industry partners on solutions that enhance the TP infrastructure, teaching and learning.

The TP Smart Campus Platform project will provide a real test bed and cross-disciplinary platform to try out ideas, build capability, and train future-ready students to support manpower demands for the next phase of development, especially with Singapore’s Smart Nation vision and roadmap.

TP will collaborate with Cisco Systems, EMC, Johnson Controls (S) Pte Ltd, NCS/SingTel and SAS Singapore on the Smart Campus Platform project. It is also exploring partnerships with companies such as NEC Asia Pacific and ST Electronics (Info-Comm Systems) to trial smart campus solutions.

With close to 20,000 full time and part-time students and staff at its campus, Temasek Polytechnic is a microcosm of future citizens, digital natives who consume and produce digital services/data naturally. Apart from studying and learning new skills and knowledge, students also use TP facilities, engage in transactions, and interact within a lively campus. TP plans to build services around infrastructure, teaching and learning on the TP Smart Campus and to facilitate a lively eco-system where students and staff learn and work. TP staff and students will be asked to propose new ideas from cross disciplinary teams that could be piloted and rolled out where suitable.

“Developing a standards-based smart campus platform will enable TP to leverage on technology to provide responsive and innovative solutions and services. By being a test-bed for solutions we hope to contribute towards the nation’s efforts to realise the vision of Singapore being the world’s first Smart Nation,” said Boo Kheng Hua, Principal & CEO, Temasek Polytechnic.

Steve Leonard, Executive Deputy Chairman of IDA said, “The Smart Campus plays a part in building Singapore into a Smart Nation. To build Singapore into a Smart Nation, we need to build Singapore’s talent. IDA is excited that Temasek Polytechnic is collaborating with industry partners to make Singapore’s vision a reality and we encourage more industry players to come on board."

“Temasek Polytechnic’s initiative to involve their students in building Singapore into a Smart Nation is an excellent opportunity to develop students’ skills and interest in infocomm technologies (ICT) to solve real-world problems in collaboration with industry partners. This will prepare students to drive digital innovations to shape citizen services and industries in their future careers,” said Kiren Kumar, Director, Infocomms and Media, Singapore Economic Development Board.

The TP Smart Campus will be a standards-based pilot site, aligned to what the IDA Smart Nation Platform (SNP) is building. This allows integration of solutions and projects to Connect, Collect, Comprehend and Co-create data and services within and beyond the campus. The early adoption and test bedding of the SNP standards will also allow the TP Smart Campus to tap on to SNP developments, and correspondingly, produce students who are aware of the architecture, technology and standards in this space.

“A key focus of NCS is to enhance the education paradigm through advanced technology that facilitates student-centric learning in the new digital environment," said Chia Wee Boon, CEO of NCS. “This collaboration enables NCS to transform Temasek Polytechnic into an intelligent and effective hub which serve as test-bed for various innovative solutions as well as equipped students with the essential skills for the workplace of the future.”
