NCS to develop young ICT talents for Singapore's Smart Nation initiatives To train 100 Singaporean entrant level professionals under IDA's Company-Led Training Programme
Singapore, Wed Aug 19 06:44:00 GMT 2015
NCS is supporting Singapore’s Smart Nation initiatives by committing to train 100 Singaporean entrant-level professionals over two years under its Solutions for Urbanised Future (SURF) training programme.
The graduates will get on-the-job training with NCS, including participation in proof-of-concept projects and smart cities research and development work. They will be trained to critically analyse urban planning problems and propose solutions through the intelligent use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).
The NCS SURF training programme is part of the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore’s Company-Led (CLT) Training initiative which helps companies recruit, mentor and train Singaporean entrant-level professionals in ICT. The 100 graduates will form the largest intake of trainees since the CLT programme was introduced in 2011.
Mr Bill Chang, CEO, Singtel’s Group Enterprise and Country Chief Officer said: “Having talents with the knowledge and skills to apply smart city solutions is critical to realising Singapore’s aspiration to be the first Smart Nation in the world. Singtel is committed to doing our part and working with partners such as IDA to build this future-ready talent pool.
“Our customised NCS SURF training programme will enable participants to quickly acquire technical skills in applications development and system programming for real life client projects.”
Steve Leonard, Executive Deputy Chairman, IDA said: “Working with talented young Singaporeans who can innovate and find creative ways of solving real world challenges is important as we build Singapore into a Smart Nation. The IDA team is looking forward to helping industry leaders such as NCS train, mentor and employ great tech professionals that will play a critical role in helping to build the future of Singapore."
Currently, 45 young professionals have started their training.
They are mentored by senior specialists from NCS’ business application services unit to understand fundamentals in applications development, enterprise architecture frameworks, industry best practices and project management.
They will have the opportunity to work on client projects, come up with proto-types of solutions, and use the latest technology and tools to develop smart city innovations.
The trainees will also receive soft skills training in business communications, presentation and customer relationship management.
At the end of the training period, they will be offered permanent positions with NCS or have opportunities to develop their careers within the ICT industry.
The NCS SURF training programme supports the Government’s SkillsFuture initiative to equip Singaporeans with the know-how and critical skills to build an advanced economy.
Singtel also partners education institutions to build ICT competencies among young talents.
In January 2015, it introduced the Singtel Cadet Scholarship programme with Singapore Polytechnic and Republic Polytechnic to groom young talents in cyber security and computer engineering.
It also has an ongoing tie-up with Institutes of Technical Education, polytechnics and local universities under the Singtel High Performing Internship Experience (SHINE) programme to provide internship opportunities for their students to be exposed to the real world work environment and on-the-job learning.
