NCS To Enable A Mobile Workforce In Raffles International

Singapore, May 15, 2002

In six months time, Raffles International Limited's workforce, as well as guests in Raffles Hotel, Raffles The Plaza and Swissôtel The Stamford will experience the fusion of two world-class standards - wireless technology and Raffles International's innovative guest services.

As one of the 26 consortia awarded the 'Wired With Wireless' Mobile Workforce Call for Collaboration (CFC) by Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (iDA), this Mobile Enabling Hospitality Suite is a joint project by the consortium of National Computer Systems Pte Ltd (NCS) and Raffles International Limited (RIL). NCS is the Consultant and Systems Integrator for this proposed Mobile Enabling Hospitality Suite (MEHS).

When NCS assessed RIL's challenges, they proposed a solution which covers the entire hospitality suite of services, using wireless technology, mobile infrastructure, software and devices. Hotel staff will be equipped with the latest models of Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs), laptops or tablets to access hotel property management system and specially designed application system over 802.11b wireless Local Area Network (LAN) or General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) network. With their PDAs, the mobile hotel workforce can now handle front desk activities, tourist information, booking of facility, in-room services, dining reservation, managing room inventory, and ensuring guest safety and hotel security. There are five subsystems proposed in this mobile application for RIL. They are the mHousekeeping, mSecurity, mConcierge, mSales and mOrdering. The nature of the five sub-systems would help to streamline the daily operations of the hotels in their enterprise management and operations. They would also serve to improve communication between staff and staff, and between staff and guests.

The sample scenarios which the hotel staff can use the mobile devices include:

  • Housekeeping - instant job order on the move and guest preference collector. This means collecting data on the guests' preferred items to be stocked in the mini-bar, or their favourite toiletries like a certain brand of soap or even the colour of the bed-sheets.
  • Security and safety - instant video clip dispatch and emergency profiling. With the profile of suspicious characters made readily available to the security personnel, they can now spot the suspicious characters lurking around the hotel area more easily, thus taking timely preventive action.
  • Concierge - real-time information for the guest in your 'palm'.
  • Sales - mobile online database access for room inventory and facility status.
  • Ordering - from multimedia electronic menu to anytime anywhere order taking.

Mr. Ng See Sing, General Manager of NCS, shares about NCS' involvement in the wireless arena, "With the adoption of mobile applications picking up steam, NCS is confident of the potential and power of mobile services. The award of the CFCs is a further testimony to NCS' leadership in the development of mobile solutions. Hot on success of the NCS-led nationwide payment infrastructure, branded as YW8, NCS is delighted with the opportunity to work on two more Mobile Workforce CFCs this time."

See Sing added, "The first CFC awarded is the Mobile Enabling Hospitality Suite project which NCS is putting in resources to support RIL with the innovative use of wireless technology and mobile infrastructure software and devices to empower their staff to better service their clientele. In the second Mobile Workforce CFC, we are the Solution Integrator of the Singapore Police Force's Multimedia Messaging (MMS) Remote Monitoring Solution."
