Corporate Social Responsibility
Steering Our Corporate & Community Spirits High
NCS constantly strives for corporate excellence, but we also never neglect the need to be a responsible corporate citizen. We strongly believe in making positive contributions to the communities in which we operate. We can make the world a better place by fostering greater social cohesion and building healthy relationships among community groups.
Contributing positively to our communities has always been a key focus of NCS’ corporate citizenship programmes.
As a member of the Singtel Group, NCS actively support initiatives organised by Singtel Touching Lives Fund (STLF), which is dedicated to helping children and young people with special needs in Singapore.
Giving Back to the Community
At NCS, we support the philosophy that "it is more blessed to give than to receive". Our employees believe in contributing to the community at large.
We play an active role in supporting the less fortunate through our partnership with Ang Mo Kio Family Services Centre (AMKFSC) in the annual “Adopt-a-Family” programme. As part of this initiative, NCS employees help to fulfil wish-list items of needy families under the care of AMKFSC with the aim of bringing festive cheer to the less privileged in our community.
NCS employees also demonstrate their sense of community spirit through volunteering their time to support fund-raising events, community activities including outings with needy children and elderly.
Fostering A Caring Community
NCS recognises individuals and teams that have made a difference in the community, devoting their time selflessly to community work and helping the less fortunate through the company's Community Service Award. As part of our efforts to further promote a spirit of volunteerism amongst employees, we also introduced a scheme that allows staff to take time off to participate in community activities.
Sharing Our IT Expertise
Tapping the company's talent pool of IT expertise, NCS generously shares its knowledge with the IT community and community at large.
We are represented in various councils such as the Singapore Infocomm Technology Federation (SITF) and Singapore Computer Society (SCS). In addition, we are a corporate partner in the SCS Resource Centre Development Fund. In recognition of our contribution to SCS membership, resources and activities, NCS was conferred the inaugural Singapore Computer Society (SCS) Distinguished Corporate Award 2003.
Other NCS community efforts include the Enable 2000 programme, where employees volunteer to test and repair used computers, which are then donated to charitable organisations. NCS is also an active supporter of MINDS through the provision of desktop training.
Over the years, NCS has participated in various philanthropic activities including:
Donation of 400 refurbished laptops to nine charities under the care of Community Chest
In November 2013, NCS contributed 400 refurbished laptops to nine charities under the care of Community Chest (ComChest). The laptops were used to facilitate classroom teachings and support the administrative needs of the charities. The donation was an extension of an existing close working relationship between Singtel and ComChest under STLF, which has raised over S$24 million since 2002. MINDS Lee Kong Chian Gardens School, one of STLF beneficiaries, received 125 laptops while the remaining devices were distributed to the other charities.
As part of NCS' community and sustainability efforts, we are glad to help refurbish laptops to support the education of needy students, as well as support the administrative needs of the charities. NCS staff volunteered their time over two weeks to ensure the laptops are in good working condition before they were deployed in this programme. We hope to sustain these efforts and make more regular donations, offering our help to charities that will find them useful.
Raising S$59,000 for Myanmar and Chengdu Victims
In May 2008, tragedy struck twice in the region when a cyclone hit Myanmar and a devastating earthquake rocked Sichuan, China.
The NCS Corporate Citizenship Taskforce initiated a two-week donation drive to raise funds for victims of both disasters. Response from employees in Singapore and our regional offices was overwhelming, raising about S$59,000 in funds. Apart from financial and emotional support, NCS also provided on-site employee services in Chengdu to support our colleagues during the difficult period. Employees in the Chinese city also responded wholeheartedly to calls for blood donation in China, while NCS staff in Beijing pooled money and bought toys and stationery for children who had lost their loved ones.
Offering Aid to Asian Tsunami Victims
When news broke about the 2004 Asian tsunami disaster, NCS employees quickly sprang into action. Location was no longer a barrier as NCS employees from Australia to Singapore, Hong Kong to China rallied together and raised S$65,000 over a three-day donation drive. Employees also volunteered to collect medicine, clothes, and food for the various relief organisations and some even gave their time generously, packing relief necessities that were then sent to the victims.
